Unfortunately, we might not have time for a healthy breakfast. That usually leads to making quick choices that can get the job done but might not be healthy in the long run.

That’s because popular breakfast foods can be a cause of inflammation in the body, which is problematic when it becomes chronic. This can cause the body to work hard to try and reduce the inflammation and then leave it tired and susceptible to other issues due to a weakened immune system and other processes.

Washington Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five breakfast foods to avoid to cut down on inflammation issues.

  1. Breakfast Pastries

Having a muffin, donut, or other pastry with coffee is a popular breakfast option, especially for those on the go, but all that processed sugar is bad for the body, especially first thing in the morning, and the bad bacteria in your digestive system actually thrives on this sugar.

  1. Processed Meat

Most breakfast meats—sausage and bacon especially—are processed and can cause inflammation due to high amounts of saturated fat.

  1. Sugary Cereals

Cereals containing whole grains and no added sugar can be a healthy option, but many are loaded with sugar and wheat, which can also cause inflammation.

  1. Sugary Oatmeal or Yogurt

Plain oatmeal and yogurt is healthy, but buying ones with added flavor mean that flavor is coming in the form of artificial sources like sugar and other chemicals. If you need to add sweetness, use fresh or frozen fruit.

  1. Breakfast Shakes or Smoothies

Some meal-replacement shakes are healthy, but many are loaded with simple carbohydrates and other processed ingredients like vegetable oil. Shakes and smoothies are a nice option, but store-bought ones are also loaded with sugar, so you’re better off making your own.
