It may seem like everyone has a smartphone, but as the demographics get older, it actually may not be as common as you think. A study in 2020 found that while 86% of Americans ages 50-59 had a smartphone, that number dropped to 81% for the 60-69 age group, and fell even further to just 62% of those 70 and older.

But if you or someone you know is still resisting by sticking with either a flip phone or going without a cell phone at all, you’re missing out on some excellent features (besides talking or texting) that will likely make your life easier.

Washington Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five additional uses for a smartphone that will make you wonder how you lived without them.

  1. Flashlight

You always need a flashlight when one isn’t handy. But you don’t have to have that problem again if you’re armed with your smartphone, as with a couple swipes and a tap, you can have a flashlight right at your fingertips.

  1. Voice Recorder or Virtual Notepad

Whether you prefer to jot down notes or dictate them, you’ll never be far away from a pad again, as your smartphone can do both of these things. You’ll be able to remember things to get at the store, write down doctor’s orders, or anything else you might otherwise forget.

  1. Emergency Broadcast System

You’re used to seeing weather and other public emergencies blaring over the television or radio, but your phone is tied into this system as well. This also covers emergencies like Amber Alerts as well. If you live in an area where severe weather can develop quickly, this is an important tool to have since it can wake you up at night to alert you of potential danger.

  1. Magnifying Glass

If you’re having trouble seeing small print, you can either download a magnifier app or use your device’s camera to zoom in on what you’re trying to see.

  1. Navigation System

You don’t have to worry about a GPS in your car because your smartphone can also serve as a navigation device. If you’re out for a walk, you can also set in your destination in case you get turned around.
